Castle Squares used to belong to the king. The buildings around it were created at the time when the Castle was extended, during the reign of King Zygmunt III Waza.
This Baroque monument is unique in Europe, as it departs from the traditional model of a ruler’s monument. The sculpture of the King is 2.75 m high, in archaistic armour. The column’s height, including its pedestal, is 22 meters. The Column fell down in January 1945, and was reconstructed in 1948-1949. At that time the column was moved to face Krakowskie Przedmieście street.
